Determination, teamwork, focus, focus, focus – this is the best way to describe the Andromeda 90 and 91 Boys teams at the 2008 U.S. Youth Soccer Southern Regional Championships held in Raleigh, N.C. June 19 – 25. The results of their efforts produced two Region III Champions for the Andromeda Soccer Club!
It was a magical week for Andromeda in North Carolina. For the 90B and 91B to go a collective 12-0 against the very best Region III has to offer is an incredible accomplishment. Both teams played six days in a row … one of the most exhausting things a soccer team could ever go through. Both teams exhibited a style of play, a level of composure and a fitness level that was admired and praised by opponents, referees, tournament administrators and college coaches alike.
The Andromeda 90 Boys entered the tournament as defending National Champions and had a large target on their backs with every team they faced wanting to be the one that knocked them out. Their resilience in pool play included victories over Texans FC 89/90 Red from South Texas 2-1, Fort Smith Express from Arkansas 8-0, and Lexington United FC from South Carolina 4-0. The 90 Boys defeated TNFC Blue from Tennessee in the quarter-finals 3-2, Charlotte SC Blue from North Carolina in the semi-finals 4-0, and finished off North Atlanta 08 Elite from Georgia in the finals 2-0.
Congratulations to Coach Oscar Borgarello and his 90 Boys on repeating as Region III Champions and returning to Nationals to defend their title!
The Andromeda 91 Boys were determined to follow in the footsteps of their Andromeda “brothers” and finish their mission at the Regionals tournament. Their journey to the Region III title included pool play victories over Little Rock FC 91 Blue from Arkansas 2-1, Tulsa Soccer Club from Oklahoma 3-1, and Triangle FC Navy from North Carolina 5-0. The 91 Boys then defeated DSC 90 Green from South Carolina 2-1 in the quarter-finals, Dallas Texans 91 Red 1-0 in the semi-finals, and CASL Elite from North Carolina 2-0 in the Regional Championship round.
Congratulations to Coach Michael Powers and the 91 Boys on returning to the Regional Championship game for the second year in a row … and clearly refusing to return this time without their own Regional Championship and an invitation to Nationals!
The Andromeda Soccer Club is proud to have two 2008 Regional Champions. Good luck to both teams as they continue the determination, teamwork, and focus on the road to Nationals! The National Championships will be held in Little Rock, Arkansas, on July 22-27.
